Buying used in Cyprus: the checks that matter

14 August 2026

A used car in Cyprus has usually lived a different life to the same model elsewhere. Short journeys, coastal air, sustained heat and a meaningful proportion of imported stock all leave marks worth looking for.

Establish where the car came from

A good share of the market is imported. That is not a problem in itself, but it changes what you can verify. Ask where the car was first registered and whether the seller holds the import documentation. A car with a traceable history in a country whose records you can check is worth more than one that arrives with a gap.

Look for sun and salt, not just mileage

Heat degrades interiors and rubber faster than distance does. Check dashboard cracking, perished window and door seals, and hoses under the bonnet. On coastal cars, look underneath and inside the wheel arches for corrosion. A low-mileage car that has sat outside near the sea can be in worse condition than a higher-mileage one kept inland and garaged.

Short journeys are hard on cars

Cyprus driving is often short-hop, which is the least kind pattern for an engine. Cold starts, incomplete warm-ups and heavy air-conditioning use add up. Service history matters more here than the odometer, because it tells you whether the car was maintained for how it was actually used.

Air conditioning is not optional

Test it properly, at idle and while moving, and let it run. A system that cools briefly and then fades is a repair, not a quirk. On this island that repair is not something you can defer.

Check the paperwork before money moves

If any of these cannot be produced, treat that as information rather than an inconvenience.

Get an independent inspection

An independent mechanic looking at a car for an hour is the highest-value money in the whole process. Choose your own rather than one the seller recommends.

Listed prices here are VAT-inclusive at the Cyprus rate, and compared across every provider advertising the same model, so you can see whether an asking price sits inside the market or outside it.
