Is it cheaper to lease or buy a car in Cyprus? Comparing four-year costs and benefits

21 October 2026

Choosing between leasing and buying a car in Cyprus depends on your budget, how long you expect to need the car and how you plan to use it. Each option has benefits and trade-offs worth considering.

For a fair comparison, look at similar cars over the same period and account for the full cost of each option. Include insurance and maintenance, checking whether these are covered by the leasing agreement. If you buy, factor in the car’s estimated resale value at the end of that period.

Before comparing the costs in detail, let’s look at the benefits and trade-offs of leasing and buying in Cyprus.

The benefits of leasing a car in Cyprus

Leasing can offer advantages whether you’re only planning to move to Cyprus, settling in or already living on the island long term.

Keep more cash available upfront

Buying a car outright means paying the full purchase price upfront. Leasing spreads the payments over the contract period, although some agreements require an advance payment or a refundable security deposit.

Keeping more cash available can be particularly helpful when you’re moving to Cyprus and covering initial housing costs, such as a rental deposit, any agency fees and other setup expenses.

Routine costs are easier to plan

Including routine running costs in your lease payment can make your budget easier to manage. Depending on the agreement, a comprehensive package may cover insurance, scheduled servicing, repairs, tyres, road tax and roadside assistance. Check what’s included and whether any limits or exclusions apply.

Having the leasing provider arrange servicing and repairs can also save you time, particularly if you’re new to Cyprus and haven’t yet found a mechanic you trust. Confirm how this support works and which workshops you can use.

A replacement car can be especially helpful if you depend on your vehicle for work or everyday journeys. It reduces the disruption while your car is being repaired, especially with Cyprus having not the most reliable public transportation. Check whether a replacement car is included and how long you can use it.

These arrangements make both the costs and the practical side of running a car more predictable. Even a new vehicle needs scheduled maintenance, so the benefit depends on what the provider covers and organises under your agreement.

Leasing gives allows for more spare room when plans change

A monthly arrangement, such as Hertz Flex Drive, may suit you if your job, address or length of stay is uncertain. It offers a shorter commitment while you decide whether to settle in Cyprus or return home. Upfront fees, notice periods and refund conditions still need to be considered.

If your plans are more settled, a fixed four-year lease provides an agreed monthly payment over a longer period. Check the early termination terms so you understand the cost if your circumstances change.

Flexibility also matters at the end of the agreement. A lease that allows you to return the car can make it easier to move to another vehicle without organising a sale. Check the mileage limits and return conditions before committing.

If you’re still deciding which size or type of car suits your daily journeys, browse the Cyprus Motors & Marine leasing catalogue to shortlist vehicles and compare prices across the entire island. Once you’ve found an option that interests you, you can submit an enquiry and we’ll make sure the leasing company with the right vehicle will contact you as fast as possible to discuss the details.

Access to newer cars

Leasing spreads your payments over an agreed period, which may put a newer or fancier car within the budget compared with what buyers can afford to buy outright.

A lease that includes servicing and repair cover also helps keep the vehicle well maintained throughout the agreement, with the provider handling the work covered by your contract.

If you prefer to change cars every few years, an end-of-contract return option makes that easier. You can return the vehicle and arrange a lease on a newer model without having to find a buyer or organise the sale yourself.

Road to ownership

Some leasing agreements allow you to buy the vehicle at the end of the contract. This can suit expats who initially lease while settling into Cyprus, then decide to stay longer and want to own a car.

If the vehicle suits your needs, a purchase option lets you keep a car you’re already familiar with and avoid searching for another one. Ask how the purchase price is determined so you can factor it into your comparison with buying outright from the start.

The benefits of buying a car in Cyprus

Buying suits people who expect to keep a car for several years and want more control over its use and eventual sale.

You can recover part of the cost when you sell

When you buy a car, some of the purchase price comes back when you sell it. This can reduce the overall cost of ownership, particularly if you buy at a reasonable price and maintain the vehicle. The amount you recover depends on its condition, mileage and the market when you sell.

For longer-term residents, keeping a suitable car for several years also spreads the initial purchase cost over more years of use. Its eventual resale value should form part of the cost comparison with leasing.

You decide how to use and keep the car

Ownership gives you freedom from lease mileage allowances and end-of-contract return conditions. You can keep the car longer, sell when your circumstances change or make suitable modifications, subject to legal and insurance requirements.

This can be useful if your mileage varies or you expect to drive regularly between towns. Anyone you allow to drive must still meet your insurance policy’s terms.

Buying used can make ownership more affordable

A used car may cost less to buy than a comparable new model, making ownership more accessible within your budget. Its maintenance history may be less certain, so review the registration and service records and arrange an independent inspection before purchasing.

As the owner, you organise servicing, repairs, compulsory third-party insurance and renewal of the circulation licence, commonly called road tax. You’ll also need to budget for unexpected repairs and arrange the sale if you decide to leave Cyprus.

More freedom to customise your vehicle

Buying gives you more control over how you customise a vehicle to your needs. If you’re planning substantial changes, such as converting a cargo van into a camper, ownership is more suitable because you aren’t working within a leasing provider’s modification and return conditions.

For major changes, check the approval requirements with the Cyprus Road Transport Department and confirm insurance cover before work begins.

Comparing the cost of leasing and buying over four years

To compare the costs, let’s use a new Kia Picanto 1.0 Style Plus automatic, driven for 20,000 kilometres a year over four years. That means 80,000 kilometres in total, starting with a new car under both options.

Leasing costs

As checked on 15 October 2026, Executive Lease advertises this model at €279 a month plus VAT, with no advance payment, a 48-month agreement and a 20,000-kilometre annual allowance. Its FAQ confirms that private individuals can use the service.

Including VAT at the standard rate of 19%, the payment is €332.01 a month, totalling €15,936.48 over four years.

The advertised package includes maintenance and repairs, tyre replacement every 40,000 kilometres, comprehensive insurance, road tax, roadside assistance and a replacement car, subject to the agreement’s terms.

This calculation assumes you complete the full contract within the mileage allowance. Insurance excesses, extra-kilometre fees and return charges are excluded. Ask for a written quote confirming these terms and any early-return costs. If your stay in Cyprus may be shorter, compare a monthly arrangement using its own price and conditions.

Buying costs

The November 2025 Kia Cyprus price list, still linked from Kia’s Picanto page when checked, lists the automatic Style Plus variant in white at €16,500, including VAT. Confirm the exact model year, specification and final on-the-road price with a dealer before treating the two vehicles as equivalent. This example assumes a cash purchase, so finance charges are excluded.

For the sale after four years, we’ve assumed €9,500 in resale proceeds. That gives an estimated depreciation of €7,000. Listings reviewed on 15 October 2026 included a 2022 automatic Picanto at €10,500 with approximately 67,000 kilometres and a 2021 automatic at €9,500 with approximately 80,000 kilometres. These are asking prices for cars of different ages and specifications, rather than completed sales or a forecast of this car’s future value. Every €1,000 change in resale proceeds changes the ownership total by the same amount.

The insurance estimate uses €475 a year, giving €1,900 over four years. This is the comprehensive-cover average published in Pitsas Insurance’s 2025 cost section, rather than a quote for this Picanto or a particular driver. Insurance excesses are excluded.

We’ve also allowed €1,000 for routine servicing, €600 for tyres and additional repairs, and €200 for the circulation licence, equivalent to €50 a year. These are budgeting assumptions. Confirm servicing prices and the actual licence fee against the vehicle’s registration details. Separate roadside assistance and replacement transport are not included in the buying estimate.

Figures are rounded to the nearest euro. Fuel and parking are excluded from both options.

On these assumptions, buying costs about €5,200 less over four years, equivalent to approximately €109 a month. The result depends on the estimated running costs and resale proceeds, as well as completing the lease on the stated terms.

Leasing may still suit you if keeping the €16,500 available for relocation or other plans matters more, or if you value the included services and avoiding the resale process.
