Leasing or buying in Cyprus: which actually suits you

12 August 2026

Most advice on this question is written by someone with an interest in the answer. What follows is the reasoning we would use ourselves, laid out so you can reach your own conclusion.

Start with how long you are staying

This matters more than any monthly figure. If your horizon is two or three years — a posting, a contract, an uncertain plan — leasing removes the part of car ownership that costs the most and is hardest to predict: what the car is worth when you leave. Selling a car in a hurry is where people lose money, and a departure date is a hurry.

If you are settled, buying almost always wins over a long enough period, because you eventually stop paying anything at all.

Compare the whole cost, not the monthly one

A lease payment usually bundles things a purchase price does not. Before comparing two numbers, establish what each one contains.

Once both sides include the same things, the comparison means something. Until then you are comparing a bundle to a bare price.

Be honest about your mileage

Cyprus is small, which lulls people into underestimating. A daily Nicosia–Limassol commute is a substantial annual figure, and lease excess-mileage charges are billed per kilometre at the end, when you have no leverage. Work out your real annual distance and price the lease around that number rather than the one that makes the monthly look best.

The case for buying that people forget

A purchased car can be sold the moment it stops suiting you. A lease generally cannot be exited cheaply. If your circumstances are genuinely unsettled, the flexibility of ownership can outweigh the predictability of leasing — which is the opposite of how leasing is usually pitched.

A reasonable rule of thumb

Short, defined stay and you value certainty: lease. Long or open-ended stay and you are comfortable managing a car: buy. Anything in between, run the whole-cost comparison above — it usually resolves quickly once both sides include the same items.

Prices on this site are compared across every provider we can see, so you can sanity-check any quote you are given against what the rest of the market is asking.
